Day 13 - August 8
Djúpivogur, Iceland
We arrived into Djupivogur and split up for today's excursions. Wendy took a short bus trip to see some local sights while Steve set off from the ship for a 5 hour hike.
This peak was perfectly shape into a pyramid by the glaciers.
My bus traveled to the Fossardalur (Waterfall river valley) above Fossarvik bay.
Forestry in Fossardolur began in 1998, they have planted, larch, spruce, and alder.
Fossardalur valley is in the Breiodalur volcanic area, which show eveidence of the 7-9 million year old layers of basalt that forms rock faces and ridges in the mountains.
They found clumps of reindeer hair stuck to the plants as they hiked. The Norwegian's brought reindeer to Iceland to give them a food source , but they didn't survive as livestock. Now the only reindeer on the island are wild.
A local artist caved this tree sculpture.
The guide's, aunt left a basket of goodies near the end of the hike. Just left it sitting under a table!
Homemade rhubarb juice!
If you know where you can get more, let Steve know!
Like I've mentioned, Lupine is everywhere, but it's so pretty we keep taking pictures of it!
The town is known for their granite eggs! oThe represent 34 species of birds living there.
Back on board, Steve again wearing shorts in very cold weather!
Very cool sunset with rays breaking through the clouds
Another beautiful set set this evening!
