Day 12 - August 7
Seydisfjördur, Iceland
Arriving in Port
Check out the giant wall built to protect the town from avalanches.
Docking from the bridge.
Someone else in port with us.
Relaxing before we head out.
Wendy’s Wild Ride to the Skalanes Nature Center
In Seydifjordur I boarded this all wheel drive bus for a bumpy ride along a one way dirt road to visit a private nature center.
We passed many old concrete buildings and of course, sheep. If you look closely you can see this one's curved horns, making it a male. Iceland also has females with horns but they look more like goat horns.
The reason for the 4x4 bus became apparent when we realized we had to cross 3 rivers to get to the nature center. It felt a bit like crossing the red see at Universal studios!
The nature preserve had thousands of nest birds. I was able to record the calls of Black-tailed Godwits, Arctic Terns, Common Redshanks, & Black-legged Kittiwakes.
The Alaskan Lupin was brought to Iceland in the 50's to help with erosion, but the Icelander have a love hate relationship with it since it grows like a weed.
I saw a group of Common Eider (Icelandic ducks). They naturally drop their down and people collect it from their nests, to make very expensive pillows, & duvets.
I hiked out about a quarter mile to the end of the fjord where Pufins and Kittiwakes were nesting on the rock face.
A Kittiwake on it's nest.
Puffins did burrows under the grass to protect themselves from wind and rain.
Puffins mate for life and return to the same nest every year. The male returns first to get the nest fixed up and the female arrives a couple weeks later.
This is an Arctic Tern, they get very aggressive during nesting season. They will try to attack anything that comes near their territory.
This Arctic Tern was very territorial. It would sit on this post and when you stepped out from behind the bus...
It would swoop down...
Swoop up, and dive bomb you!
Crossing back over one of the rivers!
Steve’s Hike and Sheep Encounter
Set out on a 4 mile hike to see another set of waterfalls
Nice view of the ship from up high.
View from the top. You can see rest of the group already heading back. I stuck around to get some nice photos.
Lots of stacked rocks in Iceland.
Look who I found on the trail.
Close encounter.
Maybe too close.
I'm watching you...
