Day 10 - August 5
ĺsafjördur, Iceland
Sailing the coast of Iceland felt a lot like sailing the Napali Coast in Kauai, just a lot colder!!
We "took" some other really good photos as we were sailing in, only to realize the SD card wasn't in the camera!
This is a early glimpse of the town of Bolungarvik.
Making the turn into this fjord to get to Isafjordur
Sustainable fish farming is done in many of the Icelandic Fjords. In Isafjordur they have found salmon and rainbow trout to be the most succesfull.
We were enjoying the sail so much, we forgot how little we were wearing. Brrr!
Wendy’s Excursion
ĺsafjördur & Bolungarvik Village
Once off the ship and onto a bus we left Isafjordur, traveled through a tunnel to get to Bolungarvik.
This tunnel between Isafjordur & Bolungarvik, built in 2010 is 3.5 miles long. It has saved many lives lost when driving along the narrow coast road prone to avalanches & rock slides.
They took us to a community center to hear a local women sing a few songs in Icelandic. They were quite beautiful.
We then drove around the bay to an outdoor history museum.
The town of Bolungarvik from the other side of the bay.
Good description of the buildings and fishing process we learned about.
Saw my first whale! Or part of a whale.
Also go to see this whale jaw bone.
The fish drying house.
Generally 6 men would come to these houses in the winter (they were farmers in the summer).
They would go out trailing really long lines with 1000 hooks. They most often caught cod, but occasionally would travel to Greenland to catch Greenland Sharks that caught for their livers to make oil for lights.
The salt house.
Saw some Icelandic sheep near the tunnel. pparently you need to be careful in the tunnels, because the sheep have been knon to go inside.
Out guide pointed out this area carved out by glaciers. The locals call it the troll chair. A past mayor of Isafjordur who won uncontested who also happened to be a punk rocker was know to climb up there and hold concerts for people.
Another view of the Trolls Chair!
We drove back to Isafjord and up to the Bunarfoss waterfall were we all sampled the crystal clear water. (She swore it pure, and naturally filtered)
Post excursion, I headed up for tea time!
